Kimolia Art Cafe

Last night I decided to visit the center of Athens for a walk, despite the annoying rain. It was really nice to see all these lights and partially festive atmosphere of the center, showing the impact of crisis in Greece anyway…

It was also a nice opportunity for me to visit Kimolia Art Cafe, which was only recently opened and co-owned by a good friend of mine, Nikos P. Nikos and his family, despite the really bad timing for starting a new business, decided to create a cozy place in the center of Athens (Plaka in fact, but really close to Syntagma square – no more than 5 mins on foot!), for everyone to have a cup of coffee and a snack while spending their time in the nearby shops.

Kimolia was not easy to find, mostly due to the rain and my hood which prevented me from turning my head left and right! However, it is well-located in a small quiet road. It has been seriously re-innovated by the current owners and consists of 3-4 different “rooms” or to be more precise, spaces where you can sit, relax and enjoy your coffee, drink or snack. Apart from the main, tradtional “kafeneio”-like room, there is the bar, a second room on a higher level and a “private” room with comfortable sofas and special decoration. Nikos and the rest of the team are friendly and always more than willing to start a discussion about the place.

Don’t forget to try the rakomelo from Amorgos island (raki with honey – ideal for the cold winter days) which comes with small pasteli bites, along with home-made sandwiches with black bread. I tried both of them and I was really excited, along with a large cup of cappuccino (done by a special guest – friend of Nikos!). I will have the opportunity to try additional stuff in my next visits, because there are going to be such for sure!

You can also connect to the WiFi spot of Kimolia, after you ask for the password… and it would be nice to check-in at Foursquare, just to help spread the word! Please also do not forget to write your own short story in the book found in the entrance of the cafe; a collection will be made after some time and you will make the owners of the cafe really happy by sharing your thoughts there 😉
